A common misconception of networking is “who can I reach out to, to get something” this is the complete opposite of how you should be framing conversations. The point of networking is to build a strong relationship that turns into “”.
In Wall Street and Tech, it’s a pretty intense environment, so one definite way is to be an exciting, curious and interesting person they can talk to, almost like their own student to brighten up their day. And given they have stressful hours, you can imagine they’d probably want to spend their time with people they enjoy the company of. .
Since there’s often a hierarchy (MD-VP-ASC-Analyst) you’re going to want to make sure you impress the people higher up, they have a bigger weight in your hiring decision. It’s basically their stamp of approval that overrides any other opinion on you during the process.
(friends, family, relatives, alumni, professors, fraternities, LinkedIn, neighbors) and then you’ll be moving online for cold emailing and phone calls. Being able to meet the person is way better than a phone call by the way, so offer to meet over coffee, a meal or drinks whenever it’s convenient for them (many classes have been skipped for this lol).
